Online community for medical writers
Find support, advice, and community with fellow remote-working medical writers!
Does this sound familiar?
You love working remotely but miss having colleagues
You spend hours online trying to find advice about running a freelance medical writing business
You know you have things to learn but don’t know how to find a mentor
You wish you had someone to talk to when a tricky project situation arises
You need to have more fun!
Isolation is not just unpleasant.
It also costs you.
Gain confidence by joining colleagues who can help you understand standard practice among med comms freelancers.
In 2016, after eight years working in medical writing agencies, I started my freelance medical writing business. There was a lot I loved about working on my own, but I was lonely. I missed having colleagues to bounce ideas off or to help navigate tricky client situations. I joined professional associations and business communities, but nothing really gave me what I was looking for. So, I started The Anthill!

🌟 What is the difference between Jam Sessions and Full Membership?
Full membership is the complete experience. You’ll have access to our online platform where you can chat with other freelancers in med comms, browse our resources. You can also join regular events like work sprints, planning sessions, and discussions. Members are also welcome to join jam session calls.
The jam sessions are for people who don’t want yet one more login to keep track of or feed to monitor. Jam sessions happen once per month over Zoom. You’ll hang out with a consistent group of freelance colleagues, where you can ask questions and get a sense of what’s going on in the med comms world.
💫 When do Jam Sessions happen?
They’re on a Friday at 1 pm ET each month, usually around the 3rd or 4th Friday of the month.
✨ Why is the full membership annual plan such a great deal?
Building genuine connections takes time. We believe members will get more out of the community if they commit for the long term, and so we reward them for doing so! Joining on an annual plan means you can take time to settle in and try out all the different features and events The Anthill has to offer. And if you join on a monthly plan, you can convert to an annual plan at any time.
Frequently asked questions…
-
In short: support and trust. We are a relatively small group of committed members, so you will find connection, support and friendship, which are hard to foster in very large online communities. You will also notice an absence of hard sales; once you are an Anthill member, you will have access to our full library and calendar of events; there is no further upselling for courses, coaching, or access to private spaces.
-
No! The Anthill is hosted on our own platform through Mighty Networks. This means we have a lot of control over how everything is displayed an organized, and you can participate without the distraction of advertising or social updates. Once logged in, you can post questions, find other members, browse our library content, and check out the events calendar.
-
No. Members participate in the events and spaces that look interesting and helpful for them. We have 4-5 calls a week, and many members attend anywhere from 1 call per month to 3-4 calls per week. You can think of it like a buffet: you choose the events and resources that will help you, and forget about the rest. You can, of course, come back later to try something new!
-
Not exactly. Many of the Anthill events and offerings are designed with a group mentorship philosophy in mind, and we facilitate connections between members wherever possible based on needs and expertise/experience. This may mean you get advice from one member about incorporating your business today, and then tomorrow you offer advice to someone else about how to format affiliation in a manuscript submission. All members have experience that is valuable to someone else and we do our best to facilitate everyone supporting each other.
-
No. The community is about 80% freelance writers, and we have some resources that are helpful for freelance writers, but we also have some members who work in full-time jobs. People with full-time medical writing jobs may choose to join if (a) they work remotely and would like to be part of a robust community; or (b) if they are thinking about starting a freelance business in the future and would like to get a head start making connections.
-
This isn’t a guaranteed plan for success or a get-rich-quick scheme. We provide community and support, which may lead to finding new clients, but can also lead to more satisfaction and confidence in your career. Every member is looking for something different, and you will get more out of the community if you put more effort in.
-
No. We have members who have been freelance medical writers for 15+ years, others who have just started freelancing after years in agency jobs, and still others who are quite new to medical writing. A major strength of the group is our diversity. No matter where you came from or what experience you have, you bring a unique and valuable perspective.
-
Yes. We have a space inside the community for posting job or project opportunities. There are typically 2-5 posts each week. While we do not guarantee that anyone will find a client or a job, many members have found new clients either through the job posting space, or through direct referrals from other members.
-
Most of our members are in North America, so our events are generally between 9 am and 4 pm ET. We vary the event times to try to ensure everyone can make it to at least some of the events. And we’re small and nimble enough that if you are interested in a specific event, we can try to adjust the time so you can come.
-
Yes, of course! While we hope you will find enormous value from joining The Anthill, we understand that circumstances change. Membership is billed on a monthly or annual billing cycle (your choice at registration time). You can cancel anytime to stop your membership as of the next billing date. If you decide to leave, we will miss you and hope to stay in touch!
-
When you join The Anthill, we offer a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. If you don’t feel like you’ve received value and you want to cancel within the first 30 days, just let us know and we will send you a refund. No hassles or headaches.
